PUBLISHED BY INSTA QUOTES
Plumbing quotes that win work are itemised, easy to read, and sent quickly. Here is what to include and how to price plumbing jobs for the New Zealand market.
What every plumbing quote must include
- Your PGDB registration and licence details. Plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying in New Zealand must be carried out by someone registered and licensed through the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board. Put this on the quote.
- GST number (from IRD) and business name.
- Contact details.
- Quote number and date.
- Expiry date, 14 to 30 days, as hot water unit and fitting prices change.
- Client name and job site address.
- Itemised scope, each fixture, pipe run and appliance connection as its own line.
- GST at 15% itemised separately.
- Payment terms.
- Exclusions, particularly any assumptions about the condition of existing pipework.
How to price plumbing work in New Zealand
Labour rates (2025/2026 NZ market)
Indicative licensed plumber rates, before GST:
- Auckland: $100 to $135/hr
- Wellington: $95 to $130/hr
- Christchurch: $90 to $120/hr
- Regional NZ: $85 to $115/hr
- After-hours or emergency callout: $180 to $300/hr (flat callout fee plus an hourly rate)
Drain camera work, jetting and specialist gear usually carries a hire charge on top, or is built into a higher rate for that task.
Fixture pricing
For standard installs, many plumbers quote a fixed price per fixture instead of by the hour. It is quicker to put together and easier for the client to follow:
- Replace tap set: $180 to $300 supply and install
- Replace toilet suite: $450 to $650 supply and install
- Install hot water cylinder (storage): $1,100 to $1,700 supply and install
- Continuous flow (gas) hot water: $1,400 to $2,400 supply and install
Treat these as rough market ranges. Your own pricing should reflect your costs and the margin you need.
Common plumbing quote line items
- Remove and replace [fixture], supply and install on one line.
- Connect [appliance] to the existing supply and drain.
- New pipe run, labour and materials, naming the material (copper, PEX or PVC).
- Hot water unit, supply, install, connect gas or electric, then commission.
- Rough-in for new work, priced per outlet or fixture point.
- Backflow prevention testing and certification (commercial).
- Drain camera inspection, flat rate or per hour.
Exclusions to protect yourself
- "Assumes existing pipework is in sound condition. Extra work applies if corrosion or non-standard connections are found."
- "Does not include wall reinstatement (including GIB repair) after pipe access."
- "Assumes standard clearances for the hot water unit. Variations apply if the site differs from the description."
- "Assumes mains water pressure within the normal range (around 200 to 500 kPa)."
Licensing and compliance
Regulated plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying work must be done by a PGDB licensed person, and the work must meet the relevant AS/NZS standards and the New Zealand Building Code (clauses G12 for water supplies and G13 for foul water). Gasfitting work requires a Gas Safety Certificate on completion. List the certificate in your quote scope so the client knows it is covered.
