How to Quote a Fencing Job: Australian Fencer's Pricing Guide

How to price fencing quotes in Australia — Colorbond, timber paling and pool fencing rates per metre, gates, footings, and a reusable fencing quote template for fencers.

PUBLISHED BY INSTA QUOTES

Fencing is one of the easier trades to quote per metre — until you hit rock, a sloping boundary, or an old fence that has to come out first. Price the run and forget the footings, removal and access, and the margin disappears. Here's how to price fencing work accurately for the Australian market, plus a template you can reuse.

What a fencing quote should include

  • Business name, ABN and contact details
  • Quote number, date and expiry
  • Client name and site address
  • Itemised scope — removal, footings, fence and gates as separate lines
  • Fence type, height and material specified — Colorbond, timber paling, pool-compliant
  • Linear metres and number of gates
  • Materials and labour shown separately, plus GST, payment terms and exclusions

Common fencing rates (2025 Australian market)

  • Colorbond fencing — supply and install: $75–$120 per linear metre
  • Timber paling fence: $80–$150 per linear metre
  • Treated pine post-and-rail: $40–$80 per linear metre
  • Aluminium / tubular pool fencing (compliant): $200–$350 per linear metre
  • Gates: $300–$800 each depending on size and material
  • Old fence removal and disposal: $20–$40 per linear metre
  • Fencer labour / day rate: $500–$800

These are guide ranges. Ground conditions are the wildcard — rock, reactive clay, or a sloping boundary that needs stepped or raked panels all add cost the per-metre rate doesn't cover.

How to price materials

Charge posts, panels, rails, concrete for footings and fixings at cost plus 15–25% markup. The markup covers sourcing, delivery and offcuts. Quote the post spacing and footing depth so there's no argument later — and where the fence is on a boundary, note that the quote assumes the boundary line is agreed and the neighbour's cost share (if any) is the client's to arrange.

Exclusions that protect you

  • "Assumes standard digging conditions — rock or hard ground charged at cost"
  • "Assumes boundary line is established and agreed; surveys at client's cost"
  • "Does not include removal of existing fence unless listed"
  • "Does not include retaining walls or levelling of sloping ground"
  • "Underground services to be located by client prior to digging"

A free fencing quote structure you can reuse

Every fencing quote can follow the same skeleton: business details → job description (type, height, linear metres, gates) → line items (split into Removal, Materials and Labour) → subtotal → GST → total → payment terms → exclusions. Set it up once and each future quote takes minutes — and the fencer who measures up and sends a clear, itemised quote first wins more jobs than the one who promises to "drop a price round later in the week".
